He was predeceased by: his parents, Gracie Prater and T. J. Frank Prater; and his grandparents, William, Ardis Bankston and Janie Prater.

He is survived by: his wife Linda Prater of Piedmont; his children, Bernard Prater (Kierston) of Pell City, Sean Prater of Jacksonville, Synita Prater of Nashville, TN and Terrence Davidson of Attalla; and his brothers, James Terry (Katie) of Denver, CO, William Prater (Parthina) of Piedmont and Kenneth Prater (Giselle) of Newnan, GA.. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren.
