He was predeceased by: his parents, John W. Gates and Blanche Duke Gates; his wife Barbara Ann Helms Gates; his siblings-in-law, Pat Kelly and Joe Weidenbach; and his niece Betsy Weidenbach.
He is survived by: his siblings-in-law, Peggy Weidenbach, Nancy Tisdale (Ron) and Lavon Kelly; his nieces and nephews, Charles Kelly (Kristy), John Kelly (Julie), Joey Tisdale (Paige), Susan Weidenbach Hamlet, Mitzy Kelly Trusty (Wendell) and Beth Tisdale Kirchner (Jacob); and his great-nieces and great-nephews, Gregory Park, Cullis Kelly, Caleb Kirchner, Levi Kirchner, Phaden Tisdale, Ryner Tisdale, Mary Katherine Hamlet, Madeline Hamlet, Taylor Park, Caroline Kelly, Kathleen Kelly, Charli Grace Kelly, Libby Kelly and Isabella Kirchner.
