He was predeceased by: his son Steven Cranston Nelson; his great grandchildren, Hayden Lee and Dayton King; his parents, Henry Nelson and Gertie Hicks Nelson; and his sisters, Mavis McLain and Marjorie Wilkinson.

He is survived by: his wife Margaret Jewell Nelson; his daughter Nancy Nelson Moore (Harold) of Nashville, TN; his grandchildren, Cyndi King and Brandon Daniel (Susan) of Prattville, AL; and his brothers, Crawford Nelson (Linda) of Talladega, AL and Leon Nelson of Heflin, AL.. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren and step granddaughter and two step grandsons.
