He was predeceased by: his wife Clara Jane "Janie" Myers; his son David Wayne Elder; and his siblings, Frank Elder, Fred Elder, Herbert Elder, Estell Barnes, Jewel Bradford, Doris Bentley and Edna Mallory.

He is survived by: his children, Teppper McHugh (Max), John Elder (Laura) and Bill "Tony" Elder; his grandchildren, Shelby Drumm (Charles), Jamie McHugh, Kori Vickery (Adam) and Noah Elder; and his great grandchildren, James Sullivan Vickery and Harper Drumm. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
