She was predeceased by: her parents, George B. Gargus and Mary Etta Tolbert Gargus; her husband R. Hoyt Payne; her children, Kelly H. Payne and Bertie P. Vaughn; her son-in-law Robert B. Vaughn; and her siblings, Arthur, Dewey, Pliney, Earl, Norman Gargus, Goldie Whited and Ada Tolbert.
She is survived by: her grandchildren, R. B. Vaughn, II (Kimi), Terri T. Shamblin (Gregg), Brett H. Vaughn (Umi), Bitzi V. Straughan (Bill), Patricia T. Carlee (Soni) and Jennifer W. Day (Sean). She is also survived by thirteen great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
