He was predeceased by: his parents, James Wells Rutland and Effie Mahan Rutland; his siblings, Dorothy Lane Morris (Walker), Nancy Margaret Agnew Yates, Effie Mahan Harrison (John) and James Wells Rutland Jr. (Lucile); and his grandson Geoffrey Warren Glaub.

He is survived by: his wife Clara Ann Martin Rutland; his daughters, Clara Rutland Mallette (Reese), Nancy Rutland Glaub (Christopher) of Birmingham, Susan Rutland Farrell (Brian) of Mentone, AL and MaryGoodloe Tucker (David) of Weddington, NC; and his grandchildren, Lee Goodloe Mallette (Allie), Clara Shannon Mallette LaDuke (Logan), Ashton Brooke Glaub, Emily Rutland Glaub, Katherine Frances Glaub, James Hampton Vinoski, Michael Hogan Vinoski, Clara Elizabeth Tucker and AnneMillen Rutland Tucker. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
