He was predeceased by: his parents, Howard Cater (Buck) and Irene Williams Cater. He is survived by: his wife Ann Kirke White Cater; his children, Mae Mae Cater Kracke (Gil), Frank Shelley White Cater (Christy) and Caroline Cater Reynolds (Richard); his grandchildren, Richard Hill Cater, Mary Caroline Kracke, William Matthew Cater, Margaret Cater Kracke, Anne Ellen Reynolds, Mary Bains Reynolds and Frances Mae Reynolds; his sisters, Emily Cater Hubbard (Clark) and Alleen Williams Cater (Lyle); his nephew William Gordon Thames, Jr. (Mary Owen); and his nieces, Irene Thames Gardner (Huey) and Lilly Thames Lerner.
