He is survived by: his wife Darlene; his children, Wayne Whisenhunt, Ronald Whisenhunt (Katrina) and April Ingram (Chris); his grandchildren, Kayla Whisenhunt, James Whisenhunt, Allen Whisenhunt and Oliver Ingram; and his siblings, Larry Whisenhunt (Deborah), David Whisenhunt (Shelia), Shirley Robertson (Stanley) and Peggy Baylock (Gary).

Sonny died of complications due to Covid-19, he was 70 years old at the time of his death.
