He was predeceased by: his son Patrick Johnson; his parents, Robert Hawkins and Mattie Hawkins; and his sisters, Ceila Burtman and Kay Pesnell.

He is survived by: his wife Sylvia Layton Hawkins; his daughters, Heather Watt and Conda Crowe (Mike); and his brothers, Bobby Hawkins and Jim Hawkins (Joyce). He is also survived by five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
