He was predeceased by: his father Samuel Cathey; his daughter Sharren Cathey Moore; his mother Ola Wilson Cathey; his wife Shirley Ann Cathey; and his siblings, Lester Cathey, David Cathey, Benjamin Cathey, Desi Cathey, James E. Cathey, Willie Ree McCary and Elizabeth Cathey.
He is survived by: his children, Jruby Cathey Jr., Sharral Cathey Keith and Phebea Hall (Eugene); his siblings, Jewel Peoples, Linda Brown and Frank Cathey; his family, Kenneth Cathey, Micheal Cathey, Jr., Jalen Cathey, Cliffton Taylor, Rebbie Taylor-Jones, Roger Moore and Sherrel Keith; and his nephews, David Nunn and Thomas Wilson Jr.. He is also survived by eight loving grandchildren.
