He was predeceased by: his parents, James Herndon and Laura Callie Hooks; and his son Robert Talmage Hooks. He is survived by: his wife Betty Hooks of Monroeville, AL; his sons, James B. "Bryant" Hooks of Mexia, AL and Leland Ross Hooks (Sabrina) of Ollie, AL; and his siblings, Charles Douglas Hooks of Fernandina Beach, FL, Roy Price Hooks of San Antonio, TX, Dale Hooks of St. Petersburg, FL and Myrtle DeLuca of Pawtucket, RI. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren; 1 step-grandchild; and 5 great-grandchildren.
