He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Oliver Mathis and Sarah Mathis; his daughters, Lisa Mathis and Lauren Brown (Charles); his grandchildren, Jacob Brown, Connor Williams, Katherine Brown, Erin Brown, Sophie Williams and Claire Williams; his siblings, Richard Mathis (Norma) and Sarah Squillante (Lou); his wife Patricia Mathis; his siblings, James Mathis (Lois), Ronald Mathis (Randi) and Inez Kent (John); and his grandson Bryn Williams. He was also cherished by cousins, nieces, nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.
