He is survived by: his wife Emma Christine Hayles; his children, Tina Scott (Joel), Lateeshi Dixon, Steward Hayles III (Ayata), Reshonda Gooden (Byron), Daniel Hayles and Andrew Hayles; and also Michael Hayles, Sr. (Judy). He is also survived by 17 grandchildren.
