She was predeceased by: her parents, Simmie Richardson and Lottie Richardson; her former husband Jimmy Lee Carpenter; her son Jimmy Wayne Carpenter; and her sister Quida Loper.

She is survived by: her husband William Shelton Oates; her children, Simon LeThoy Carpenter, Michael Oates (Brenda), Buck Oates, Sonya Nelson (Todd) and Barbara McInnis (Gary); and her sisters, Gayle Hill (Mike) and Lorraine Morgan. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
