He was predeceased by: his wife Yong Ja Balmer; his parents, Glenn Balmer and Frances Balmer; and his sister Joan Kantrowitz. He is survived by: his siblings, Dale Balmer (Bonnie), Donn Balmer (Laura), Carol Balmer and Alison Pringle; and his nieces and nephews, Jody and Currinn.
Alan earned a Merritt Scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he honed his skills and laid the foundation for a successful career as a software engineer and his contributions to the field were significant.
