He was predeceased by: his wife Ruth Burford Gibbs; his daughter Judy Gibbs Zimmerman; his parents, Elmer Gibbs and Etta Gibbs; and his siblings, James Gibbs, Thurman Gibbs, Leon Gibbs and Marie Sullivan.
He is survived by: his children, Melvin Dewayne "Wayne" Gibbs, Jr. (Pam) of Linden, AL, Bobby Gibbs (Carla) of Linden, AL and Gail Gibbs Gardner of Myrtlewood, AL; and his siblings, Ronnie Gibbs (Carolyn) of Linden, AL and Jean Osburn of Linden, AL. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
