He was predeceased by: his father Hoyt Leo Benefield; his siblings, Hoyt Gay Benefield and Kassolyne Wilkerson; and his granddaughter Cheyenne Carol Benefield. He is survived by: his wife Carol Miller Benefield; his sons, Jeff Benefield, LaFayette, Tracy Benefield (Sheila) of Alvin, TX and Greg Benefield of Evans, GA; and his siblings, Joann Hooper (Dave) of Athens, GA, Janice Kendrick (Fred), LaFayette and Tibethia Smith (Jimmy) of Sontag, MS. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made in Walter's name to the Bethany House in Auburn, Alabama.
