He was predeceased by: his parents, James Edgar Sandefur, Sr and Dorothy Ford Sandefur; and his sister Jane Suggs. He is survived by: his wife Jean Smith Sandefur; his children, Sandra Beth Sandefur, James Phillip Sandefur and Christopher Paul Ethredge; his grandchildren, Andi Crispin (Mike), Alex Sandefur, Amber Ethredge, Allissa Sandefur, Cassidy Weaver and Breanna Ethredge; and his great grandchildren, Andrew James Hicks and Cain Ethredge.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Birmingham Humane Society.
