He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Sanford and Opal Coleman; his son James Michael "Mike" Coleman; and his siblings, Bettis Coleman, Gaines Coleman, William Coleman and Kathleen Coleman Wheat.

He is survived by: his wife Melrose Beck Coleman; his daughter Lisa Coleman Harrell; his sister Marguerite Coleman Davis; and his grandchildren, Brittany Harrell Ganus, Jonathan Coleman, Cole Harrell and Daniel Coleman. He is also survived by five great grandchildren.
