He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Burnett Gibson and Pauline Davis Gibson; his sister Carline Gibson Ellis; and his grandson Joseph Smith, Jr.. He is survived by: his wife Caroline "Carol" Goodwin Gibson; his children, Vernon Gibson, Jr. (Laurel) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Fleet (Rick Jarrett); his grandsons, Galen, Garrett Fleet and Trevor Smith (Elizabeth); and his great grandchildren, Veda, Abby and Samuel Smith.
