He was predeceased by: his former wives, Georgia Inez Turnage and Mary Ann McDowell; and his grandson Chris Shepherd. He is survived by: his wife Ruth Shepherd; his children, Andy Shepherd, Ronnie Shepherd (Carol), Gayle Moore (Billy), Clint Shepherd, Lynn Shepherd, Jan Donahue (Brian) and James Shepherd; his grandchildren, Stephen Collins, Leanne Shepherd, Matt Shepherd (Natalie), Nathan Gilliland, Jacob Shepherd, Austin Vass, Kaitlin Shepherd and Michael Tinory; and his siblings, Warren Shepherd (Jackie) and Helen McKinney.
