He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Amos Shortt and Marie Shortt; his wife Carlene Shortt; his daughter Zara Lee Steva (Thomas) of Huntsville, AL; his grandson Leon Benjamin Steva; his siblings, Larry Shortt (Kathy) of Castlewood, VA, Phoeba Carol Benge (Larry) of Kingsport, TN and Judy Rife of Raven, VA; his nieces and nephews, Aimee Stefanick (Matt) of Franklin, TN, Dana Smith (Jeremy) of Richlands, VA, Daphne Horn of Atlanta, Georgia, Jerry Rose (Regina) of Raven, VA, Joshua Owens (Shelly) of Narrows, VA and Evans Horn of Doran, VA; and his great-nieces and great-nephews, Phoebe, Selah, Levi, Annora, Josephine Stefanick of Franklin, TN, Jaci, Daniel Smith of Richlands, VA, Jenna Rose of Raven, VA, Alex, Clay Gilbert of Richlands, VA, Liam and Remington Owens of Narrows, VA.. He was also cherished by several cousins, friends and good neighbors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Mining and Minerals Department at Virginia Tech.
