He was predeceased by: his parents, Sue Choat and Alfred Pickens Merrill; his wife Caroline McGee Merrill; and his brother Donald Wayne Merrill. He is survived by: his children, Natalie Smith (Sean) and Alfred Lawrence "Larry" Merrill, Jr. (Laura); his grandchildren, Ryan Smith (Morgan), Blake Smith, Lawrence Merrill, Chandler Merrill and Brent Merrill; his great grandchild Stetson Smith; and his close friend Kim Kimbrough.
