He was predeceased by: his parents, Alva Lee Smith and Ruby Holt Smith; his siblings, James, Buddy and Imogene; and his grandson Daniel Smith.

He is survived by: his wife Joan Lankford Smith; his children, Dennis Lee Smith (Pam) of Lindale, Richard Allen Smith (Kathy) of Murfreesboro and Johnna Ann Blair of Nashville; his grandchildren, Janene, Martin (Shawn), Sean Smith (Bethany), Brittany Higgins (Rich), Madison Harris (Zach), Trent Blair (Autie), Carolyn Blair and Allison Austin (Heath); his great grandchildren, Savannah Walraven, Easton Prater, Ossie Austin, Tripp Harris and Emma Higgins; and his aunt Johnnie Beck (Buddy). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
