She was predeceased by: her parents, John Nathan Abner and Luna Myrl Jackson Bishop; her husband Robert H. Bates Jr.; her son Larry Bates; her grandson Brian Pike; and her siblings, Opal White, Ruth Henderson, Margarette Jernigan, Doris Bearden, Annil Laura Bishop and Eslin Bishop.
She is survived by: her children, Shirley Bates, Linda Ivey and Becky Thomas (Eugene); her grandchildren, Michael Pike, Steven Pike (Sonya), Marvin Bowen, Bradley Morelock (Mitzi), Jeanne Phillips (Jake), Crystal Bearden (Robbie) and Shalina Price (Chay); her sisters, Gladys Jones and Lucille Richards; and her friend Robert Ogle. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, six great great-grandchildren.
