He was predeceased by: his parents, Elzie James and Ruby Smith; and his brothers, Donald Ray Smith, Jerry Smith and Roger Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Wanda Smith of Wedowee, AL; his children, Shannon Charles and Vernon Jeffery Smith; his siblings, Edith Sullivan, Rebecca Smith, Edna Charles and James Smith; his granddaughter Jordan Charles; and his nephews, Steven Charles, Michael Charles, Perry Sullivan, Kevin Coppock, Willis Vaughn and Bobby Shelton.
