James Walters Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the death of James Walters (Gulf Shores, Alabama), born in Montgomery, Alabama, who passed away on August 24, 2019. Family and friends are welcome to send flowers or leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family. He was predeceased by : his father Garvis Archie Walters and his mother, Alice Elizabeth Dawson Walters. He is survived by : his wife Gay Ann Walters of Gulf Shores, AL; his brothers, Glenn Alan Walters (Jimmie Sue) of Perdido Key, FL. and Brian Roger Walters (Bonnie) of Huntsville, AL. He is also survived by aunts, uncle, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Mr. Walters graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1965. He always loved music and during his high school years he and three other friends formed a band called The Chevelles. He was an Eagle Scout and earned his Business Degree from Auburn University in 1971. Jim served in the U.S. Navy, active and reserve for 5 years. He was a career professional with the Boy Scouts of America for 27 years. During that time he was awarded the Boy Scouts of America Medal of Heroism for saving the life of a fellow traveler. Jim truly loved people and had a huge network of friends, both in the U.S. and in other countries, including Scotland, England, Germany, and Asia. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church Gulf Shores, participating in church activities, particularly the choir. Jim was a lover of history all his life and - after traveling to Scotland in the early 1990's, he became very active in the Scottish community. In 1997 he began his own business, The Caledonian Kitchen, which manufactures Celtic foods - most notably haggis - in the U.S.A., and he soon became well known as "Laird o' th' Haggis" at Scottish events. He was a member of Fellowship Society of Antiquaries and also the Scottish Knights Templar. After retiring to Gulf Shores he enjoyed boating, fishing and spending time with friends.

The family suggest donations can be made to the Building Fund, First Baptist Church of Gulf Shores, 2200 W. 1st St. Gulf Shores, AL 36542 or Gideon's International PO Box 97251 Washington, DC 20090-7251 Interment will follow in Pine Rest Memorial Park.
