He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert James Gillem and Gertrude Gillem Beam; his son Van Odom Gillem; and his brothers, Herbert Jr., Alfred and Elmer.
He is survived by: his wife Bobbie Jean Odom Gillem; and his children, Melonie Brewer (Jerome), Sandy Grayson (Keith), Tammy Pickard (Terry) and Melvin Bruce Gillem, Jr.. He is also survived by six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and many other special family members and friends.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Van Gillem/SaraLou Beeland Scholarship Fund at First United Methodist in Greenville, AL or to a charity of your choice.
