He was predeceased by: his parents, Willie E. Freeman Butts and Ralph O. Butts; and his grandparents, Gerald Orville Butts, Bessie Ward Butts, William E. Freeman and Delilah Wilson Freeman.
He is survived by: his wife Jan Philen Freeman; his daughter Sarah Freeman Faulkner (Brett); his grandchildren, Seth Faulkner and Sage Faulkner of Birmingham, Alabama; his stepsons, Andrew Phelps (Summer) and Thomas Phelps; his siblings, Edward O. Butts (Sonja), Faye Hood Stewart (John), Elton M. Butts (Teresa), Janice Taylor, Danice Bowen and Eric L. Butts (Mavis); and his siblings-in-law, Mike Philen (Jennifer), Randal Philen and Martha Philen Gafford. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
