He was predeceased by: his parents, George Rutherford Cothran and Virginia Madison Cothran; his wife Rollanda Rudd Cothran; and his brother Rudy. He is survived by: his children, Heather Marie Cothran Newberry (Jeffrey), Charles Melvin "Chip" Cothran, Jr. (Shannon) and Theodore Madison "Ted" Cothran (Kimberly); his sister Diane Cothran Gilpin; and his grandchildren, Ben, Madi, Aurora, Escher, Jonah, Gracie and Hadley.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to Greensboro Presbyterian Church.
