He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Robert Townsend and Ella Lois McClintock Townsend; and his sisters, Jeannie Brown, Barbara Hamner and Sondra Davis.

He is survived by: his children, Chuck Townsend (Darlene) and Chris Townsend (Martha); his grandchildren, Benjamin Townsend (Ashley) and Emily Cardel (Michael); his great grandchildren, Selah Bryn Cardel, Jireh Grace Townsend, Aidan Benjamin Cardel and Nathaniel Jude Townsend; his wife Kaye Townsend; his brothers, Jack Townsend (Carolyn) and Jim Townsend; his aunt Josephine McGee (Jo); and his brothers-in-law, David Chamblee and Tim Tankersley. He is also survived by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
