He was predeceased by: his parents, Rev. John William Sowell and Vernell "Susie" Wint Sowell; and his grandparents, John L., Stella Sowell, Roy and Cynthia Mildred Wint.

He is survived by: his wife Cheryl Dawson Sowell of Excel; his children, Christopher Wayne Sowell (Heather) of Excel, Jon Michael Sowell (Michelle) of Excel, Terra Sowell Baggett (Tracy) of Excel and Lesley Sowell Ortiz (Johnny) of Excel; his siblings, Bill Sowell (Hisa) of Panama City, FL, Anthony Sowell of Seminole, AL and Martha Sowell Hinson (Hugh) of Decatur; his grandchildren, Mark Baggett, Emily Baggett Mueller, Clara Baggett, Bryant Sowell, Harlee Sowell, Ansley Sowell, Jon William Sowell, Bella Sowell, Caroline Ortiz and Camilla Ortiz; and his great grandchildren, Harrison Baggett and Theodore Mueller.
