He was predeceased by: his wife Dorothy Hatfield Thomas; his parents, Archie James Thomas and Polly Spencer Thomas; and his siblings, Archie James Thomas Jr., Levi Randolph Thomas, James Edward Thomas, Walter Lee Thomas, David Lee Thomas, L. C. Thomas, Wilma Jean Burrough and Mary Davis Hendrix.

He is survived by: his children, David Thomas, William Thomas (Tina), Joseph Thomas, Howard Thomas, Helen Watson (John) and Theresa Doan (Leland); his brother Howard G. Thomas; and also Carlos Brasfield. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren.
