He was predeceased by: his parents, Ettery (Lola Jackson Bates) and Pete; and his siblings, James "Bud" Bates, James "John" Bates and Audrey Borden.
He is survived by: his daughter Shawneri Kelsoe; his stepson Brock Rooks (Kasey); his grandchildren, Skyler Kelsoe (Hillary) and Katlin Kelsoe; his stepgrandson Wheeler Rooks; his great grandchild Brooks Kelsoe; and his sisters, Lois Lowery and Delores Robbins. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews.
