He was predeceased by: his parents, Wilbert Carter and Omie Denton Carter; and his sister Clovis Frederick. He is survived by: his wife Virginia Carter; his children, Whitney Carter and Cynthia Adams; his stepdaughter Robin McCaw (Sean); and his grandchildren, Blake Adams, Hanna McCaw, Zachary McCaw and Ben Judah Shelton.
