He was predeceased by: his wife Joy Cranick Harper; his parents, Thurman Harper and Florence Hicks Harper; and his siblings, Louise, Helen and Claude.

He is survived by: his sons, Michael D. Harper (Frances) and Stephen D. Harper (Elizabeth); his grandchildren, Brian, Brandon (Leslie), Hunter (Kelsey), Hayden, Holden, Hudson and Hope; his great grandchildren, Molly, Anna and Holly; and his brother Howard Harper (Kay).

The family requests that memorial gifts be made to the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association.
