He was predeceased by: his parents, Philip Smith and Florence Riddle Smith Armstrong; and his stepfather Ira Armstrong. He is survived by: his uncle D. Hardy Riddle; his wife Catherine Wellbaum Smith; his children, Cay Smith Davis, Barbara Smith Spain, Peggy Smith Glavin (Bernie) and Philip Hardy Smith (Debbie); his grandchildren, David Smith (Tiffany), Dr. Brian Davis (Carson), Claire Davis Posey (David), Jason Philip Davis, Meg Spain Stutts (Kenneth), Robert Spain (Laura), Julie Spain Barnhill (Corey), Dan Glavin (Corey Dennis) and Patrick Glavin; his great grandchildren, Troy Smith, Vivian Davis, Jack Davis, Helen Davis, Connor Stutts, Kinleigh Stutts and Stella Spain; and his sisters, Jacqueline Smith Wood (Jack) and Mary Armstrong Woodard. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
