He was predeceased by: his parents, William Newton and Faynell Bryant McDowell; his sister Nancy Fay McDowell; his former wife Peggy Bailey McDowell; and his stepson David Tabor King.
He is survived by: his wife Barbara King McDowell; his children, John William McDowell (Melanie), Howard Bruce King (Patti), Melinda McDowell Calderini and Carol King Beckham (Ron); his grandchildren, Meg McDowell Atkinson (Nick), Mary Katherine Calderini and Ross Hayley Beckham (Meaghan); his great grandchild Mary Elizabeth Ray (Libby); his sister Margaret Ann McDowell Driskell; and his sister-in-law Linda Bailey Green (Ray). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
