Virginia Davidson Barksdale Obituary

“Mrs. Virginia was a lady. And a lady always knows when it’s time to leave.” (From "Fried Green Tomatoes")
Mary Virginia Davidson Barksdale of Hoover, Alabama, passed away peacefully Friday, June 30, 2023, at an age she would never allow anyone to disclose, even now.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Mary Ruth Davidson; husband, James C. Barksdale; son, Kevin Barksdale; and granddaughter, Madison. Survivors include Virginia's sons, Alan Barksdale (Pam) of Florence, Alabama, and Brian Barksdale (Becky) of Hoover; as well as six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Virginia was a true steel magnolia from Coker, Alabama. She graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School and was voted Most Talented by her peers for her piano skills. She graduated from Bethel College in McKenzie, Tennessee, where she met her future husband, Jim.
Virginia was the administrative assistant at Green Valley Baptist Church in Hoover for almost 40 years, which means she ran the entire church. She also coordinated many beautiful weddings for couples at Green Valley. Virginia established the first storm shelter in Hoover, was a member of the Hoover Service club for many years, and dedicated much of her time to volunteering at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, Alabama.
Virginia was a proud and loving mother to Alan, Brian, and Kevin. She always supported them in all of their activities, careers, and hobbies (except motorcycle riding, which she absolutely did not want her boys to do, but of course, they all did anyway).
Having grown up so close to Tuscaloosa, Virginia was an avid Alabama Crimson Tide fan her entire life. She loved spending time with her friends, especially Mr. Robert "Bob" Hankins, who was her loving companion for the past four years. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who in turn, adored her right back.
Mrs. Virginia, ever the dignified Southern lady with a constant smile, quick wit, and ability to impeccably accessorize every outfit, made a sweet and lasting impact on all who met her. May her memory be a blessing.
Visitation will be held Thursday July 6, 2023 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A private family celebration of life service and burial will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to United Ability in Birmingham, Alabama, a nonprofit organization close to Virginia’s heart for the services they provide for children and adults with exceptional needs.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at Virginia Davidson Barksdale's page at http://www.southernheritagefunerals.com for her family.
