He was predeceased by: his parents, Marguerite Dews and J. Heber Dews Sr.; his wife Gwendolyn Dews; and his brothers, William Philip Dews (Bill) and Robert David Cottle.

He is survived by: his son J. Heber Dews III (John); and his siblings, Thomas Allan Dews and Elizabeth Dews. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
