She is survived by: her parents, Walter Ewing and Selma Shadburn Griffin; her husband James M. Tanner; her sons, James, Jr., Jim Tanner (Cantey) of Raleigh, NC, John Tanner (Nancy) of Washington, DC and David Tanner (Debby) of Birmingham, AL; her grandchildren, Jimbo Tanner (Michelle), Henry Tanner (Sally) of Raleigh, NC, Liza Boyd (Michael) of Washington, DC, Anne Rain Brown (Hunter) of Houston, TX, Emily Coe (Matt), Christopher Tanner (Lauren) of Birmingham, AL, Griffin Tanner (Molly) and David Tanner of Oxford, MS.; and her sister A. B. Simms of Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dear's name to the Patrick Tanner Fund at Landon School in Bethesda, MD, or the Speakers Fund at Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, AL.
