Barbara J. Hutchinson Bonner Obituary
Barbara Janet Hutchinson Bonner was born on March 7, 1930, in North Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. She was the fifth of nine children born to Louis James "L.J." and Maxie Bell Hutchinson. Barbara was educated in the Birmingham City School System and graduated from A.H. Parker High School in 1948. She earned her bachelor's degree from Alabama State University in Montgomery and a master's degree from University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1978.
In 1958, Barbara Hutchinson and Bennie W. Bonner were the first couple to be married at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Collegeville. She was a very active member there, served with the Ladies' Sodality, and was also a member of the Golden Girls.
Barbara was an educator in the Birmingham City School System for over 35 years and was involved in many professional organizations. She was active in Brownsville Heights Community Affairs, and continued to be actively involved with the Birmingham Chapter of Alabama State University Alumni Association attending all but two Magic City Classic games including 2022. Barbara was honored as one of the longest serving Zetas in the State of Alabama with more than seventy-two years of service in the Alpha Sigma Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
Barbara always surrounded herself with her friends and family. She was a force and remained vibrant (and spicy) until March 1, 2023 - a few days short of her 93rd birthday, when the Lord called her home.
Brabara is preceded in death by her parents Louis James and Maxie Hutchinson, one sister Anita Marbury, and five brothers Louis James, Jr., Charlie Lee, Earnest, Horace, Clarence; and her beloved husband of more than fifty-four years, Bennie W. Bonner. Her life will be remembered by her sister Wanza Hutchinson and her brother Ocie Hutchinson; six sons Kenneth (Sandra), Kelvin, Kerry (Carole), Korace (Debra), Keith, Karl; six granddaughters Ragina, Victoria, Raven, Khrystena, Kreia, and Khloe; six grandsons, Korace Jr., Branden, Jorden, Lucas, Seth, and Kennedy; great-granddaughter Riley, and great-grandsons Korace III and Eli.
