He was predeceased by: his wife Sammy Jo Black Smith; and his parents, Robert Addison Smith and Ruby Maxine Smith. He is survived by: his children, Foster Smith, Jason Smith (Stephanie), Hamilton, Grafton Smith (Aurora) and Raney Hawkins (James) of Sulligent, AL; his sister Wanda Sue Blake (Randy) of Beaverton, AL; his grandchildren, Alisha Hawkins, Charles Hawkins, Grafton Smith, Jr., Shelby Smith and Brett Holmes; and his niece Suzanne Ballard.
