He is survived by: his parents, James Garvin Chism and Bertha Shields Chism; his wife Martha Berry Chism; his sons, James Chism, III (Deborah) and Gordon Chism (Georgia); his grandchildren, Gideon Chism and Grace Chism; and his brother Everett Douglas Chism.

In lieu of flowers, Donations may be made to Lakeview Baptist Church-Carpenter's for Christ Auburn, Alabama.
