He was predeceased by: his parent Coy Dow Helms (Ardie Lee McCurdy); his daughter Nannette Helms; and his sisters, Neva Glen Gomillion and Joyce Dean Farrish. He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Helms of Canoe, AL; his children, James Matthew Helms of Canoe, AL, Joseph Bryan Helms of Canoe, AL and Tametha Spring Helms of Canoe, AL; his grandchildren, Sebastian Helms, Anastasia, James Dorriety, Makayla Barlow and Franklin "Mikie" Helms; his great grandchildren, Brantlee Dorriety, Lileigh Dorriety, Jaxen Barlow and Lakeland Barlow; and his niece Jenifer Dykes of Atmore, AL. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews.
