He was predeceased by: his wife Mary Ellen McSween; his parents, Jackson D. McSween and Edna Benton McSween; and his brothers, Billy Frank McSween and Douglas McSween.

He is survived by: his children, Amelia McDonald and Steve McSween (Joanna Eddins); his grandchildren, Patrick and Ashley McDonald; and his siblings, Fred McSween, Jack McSween, Derryl McSween, Ronnie McSween, Janice Lee and Martha Wallace. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

His pursuit of education was driven by a deep desire to provide for his family and to make a meaningful contribution to his community.
