He was predeceased by: his parents, Howard Lee and Blanch O'Neal Blocker Knighten; and his sisters, Margie Knighten, Diane Knighter and Betty Jean Knighten.

He is survived by: his wife Joan Cooper Knighten; his children, Rickey Allen Knighten (Stephanie), Joseph Knighten, Andria Lovett and Amanda Talley (Phillip); and his brother James Howard Knighten. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
