He is survived by: his sons, Norman Gary Mitchell (Pam), Gregory Allen Mitchell (Diana) and Joseph Walter Mitchell II (Kathleen); his grandchildren, Brent Mitchell (Amy), Caroline Hood (Garrett), Josh Mitchell (Jodi), Katie Haynes (Russ), Macy Mitchell, Braeden Mitchell, Trenton Mitchell, Kayle Rodgers, Allie Higgins, Ashlyn Higgins, D'la Armantrout, Vincent Pratt (Shay) and Shawn Armantrout (Victoria); his great grandchildren, Tyler Mitchell, Hunter Haynes, Avery Haynes, Milo Mitchell, Nora Mitchell, Vynson Pratt, Asher Pratt, Sedona Armantrout, Ka'leigh Armantrout and Bryce Armantrout; and his brother Gordon Earl Mitchell (Ruth). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
