He was predeceased by: his parents, Jesse J. Smith and Dora Mae Ramsey Smith; his wife Muriel Ann Smith; his children, Jesse J. Smith, Denise Inez Smith Abernathy and Toni Rea Smith; his grandchildren, Lauren Pruitt, Stephanie Smith, James Abernathy and John A. Smith; his siblings, Guy Smith (Laura), Lloyd Smith (Faye) and Dorothy Higginbotham; and his children-in-law, Timothy Pruitt, Megan Smith and Brenda Wilson Smith.
He is survived by: his children, John R. Smith, Jr. (Sheila), Christopher James Smith (Kelly), Stewart W. Smith (Elizabeth A.), Richard J. Smith (Barbara) and Susan Pruitt; and his grandchildren, Valerie, Joshua, Will, Sean, Jeremy, Nicholas, Aaron, Andrew, Jessica, Dusty, Jared, Zachary and Jennifer.
