He was predeceased by: his parents, E. E. Battles and Annie Smith Battles; his son Frankie E. Battles; and his siblings, James Battles and Minnie Jo Mayo.
He is survived by: his wife Mary Frances Battles; his children, Cynthia McLain-Boyles (Al) and John W. Battles Jr. (Susan); his grandchildren, Joshua Wesley Battles (Michelle) and Allison Grimes (Austyn); his great grandchildren, Jacob Battles, Aiden Grimes, Brayden Grimes, Lilah Battles and Parker Grimes; and his brothers, Ernie Battles (Terry) and Don Battles (Teresa). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Jude's Hospital.
